The Beauty Of Richmond
Richmond is a city that is actually on an island (Lulu Island) in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, and is the fourth largest member municipality of Metro Vancouver. With a population of over 230,000 people, Richmond is comprised of eight different areas or neighbourhoods: West Richmond, East Richmond, South Arm, City Centre, Sea Island, Thompson, Steveston, and Hamilton.
The Great Outdoors
Being an island unto itself, Richmond is an oasis of nature and beauty. Backdropped of course by the stunning Canadian Rockies, Richmond is immersed in everything that makes British Columbia such a beautiful place to live. Your outdoor activity options are endless, with hiking and biking on the many nature trails, golfing, hitting up a park or beach, birding, and the trademark activity of Canada's west coast: whale watching.
You'll never be the same once you experience these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Orcas, humpbacks, grays, and minke whales all call these waters home, and tours depart daily from Steveston in April through October. You might even see eagles, otters and seals too! (In case you were wondering, you are 90% guaranteed to see whales on your sightseeing tour... and if not? Tour operators will give you a free pass to return another time!)
In The Village
Historic Steveston Village sits at the southwestern shore of Richmond. Over 100 hundred years ago, Steveston was the busiest fishing port on the planet. Now, Steveston is a quaint, working fishing village which comes alive every summer with fresh seafood, vibrant markets and restaurants, gift shops, and heritage sites.
Steveston Village hosts some amazing events every year, including the Big Pirate Run, the Steveston Salmon Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Steveston Farmers and Artisan Market, National Indigenous Peoples Day, Gulf Cannery at Halloween, and Pull of the Net: A Multicultural Celebration.
The village area is surrounded by some of the best walking and biking trails in Metro Vancouver stretching along the waterfront, down the western coastline of Richmond, and from Steveston Village up the south arm of the Fraser River.
Richmond Night Market
The largest Asian-themed night market in North America can be found right here in Richmond. Called the Richmond Night Market, this incredible experience showcases hundreds of vendors and hosts thousands of visitors each weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights) from May through October.
The Richmond Night Market is by far the closest experience to an authentic Asian night market anywhere outside of Asia, and offers festival-style Oriental foods, shopping, toys, clothing, and East Asian culture.
You'll often find live entertainment happening at the Main Stage in the market -- music, dance, martial arts and much more.
Richmond Night Market is also the home of Magical Dino Park -- an incredible collection of moving, life-like dinosaurs including T-Rex, velociraptor, stegosaurus, brachiosaurus, and triceratops -- an amazing experience for people of all ages.
